James, Gilbert M. (Gilbert Morris), 1915-1982.

Born in 1915 and married in 1942 to Esther Shelhamer, Gilbert James specialized his learning, research and teaching in urban sociology. He earned an MA in sociology and anthropology from Washington University in 1957, and a Ph. D. in sociology from Northwestern in 1963. He worked on several metropolitan projects in cities such as St. Louis and Chicago, and worked abroad in India, the Dominican Republic, Africa and England. He taught at the University of Washington, the University of Chicago, Northwestern, and at Asbury Theological Seminary where he established the Urban Ministries Program for Seminarians (UMPS) and the Action Ministries Programs for Seminarians (AMPS). He died in 1982.
