Bruce Hoertel (1923 - 2004) was born in New York City, joined the Navy after high school and attended the Naval Photographic School before serving on the USS Cowpens during World War II. He worked as a film cameraman for CBS news until the 1970s and photographed for the New York Times, eventually becoming a freelance photographer for Newsweek, Fortune and the Associated Press. He traveled the world capturing the news, from Asia with President Johnson, Vietnam with South Vietnamese troops, and Moscow and China with President Nixon. Hoertel retired in 1989. His work covers the U. S. Presidents from Harry Truman to Ronald Reagan and politics in Washington, D.C. for over thirty years.
