Incorporated in 1887 under the laws of Montana Territory, the company operated a line from Missoula to Grantsdale, Mont. It was deeded in 1888 to Northern Pacific and Montana Railroad Company, which in turn deeded it to NP in 1898.

The Missoula and Bitter Root Valley Railroad Company was incorporated in January 1887 with Samuel T. Hauser as president, and A.B. Hammond as vice president. This railway was constructed as a branch line of the Northern Pacific and Montana Railroad Company and by January of 1888 extended from Missoula to Grantsdale, Montana Territory. In June of 1988 it was officially consolidated into the Northern Pacific and Montana Railroad.
