Charles Manuel Grace, "Daddy" Grace to his followers, was born in the Cape Verde Islands in 1881. He came to the United States in 1903 and settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Grace began his first church, known as the House of Prayer, in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1926. Over the next 33 years he organized 350 such places all over the country. The Savannah, Georgia House of Prayer was located at 643 W. 34th Street. Daddy Grace died on January 11, 1960 in Los Angles, California at the age of 78. He was buried in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Andrew J. Hickman was the chief photographer for the Savannah News Press, in 1959.
