John Lamb was born in Accrington, England, on 26 September 1922 . Prior to attending university, John was a student at Accrington Grammar School. John attended the University of Manchester and graduated in 1943 with a first class honours BSc in Engineering and the Fairbairn prize. He was also subsequently awarded an MSc in 1944 , a PhD for his thesis Measurement of Dielectric Properties at High Frequencies in 1946 and a DSc in 1957 .

After working for the Ministry of Supply during the Second World War, he was appointed Lecturer (and later Reader) in Electrical Engineering at Imperial College of Science and Technology, London , from 1946-1961 . He was later appointed Assistant Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1958. In 1961 he was appointed John Watt Professor of Engineering at the University of Glasgow , a position which he held until his death in 1991. He also served as President of the British Society of Rheology from 1970-1972, Vice Principle of the University of Glasgow from 1977-1980 and Scientific Adviser to the Scottish Office Industry Department from 1989-1991. He was awarded a CBE in 1986.

His publications include The Theory and practice of Ultrasonic Propagation in Principles and Practice of Non-destructive Testing, (1962); Thermal Relaxation in Liquids in Physical Acoustics, Vol. II (1965); Theory of Rheology in Interdisciplinary Approach to Liquid Lubricant Technology, (1973); Viscoelastic and Ultrasonic Relaxation Studies in Molecular Motions in Liquids, (1974); Motions in Low Molecular Weight Fluids and Glass forming Liquids in Molecular Basis of Transitions and Relaxations, (1978), and Development of Integrated Optical Circuits in Integrated Optics, (1983). He died in Glasgow on 18 December 1991 .
