David Cramer Irwin was the son of William and Elizabeth Snodgrass, early settlers and founders of the city of Wheeling where he was born, May 2, 1825; student at Western Theological Seminary in Alleghany County, Pa., 1846; ordained, fall 1850; pastorates: August and Sharon churches, Ky., 1853; Louisiana and Missouri; Harrisonburg, Va., 1858 and Mt. Horeb, 1858-1868; Bethesda,Timber Ridge, and Fairfield at Rockbridge County; settled at Lexington Va. where he became a farmer and established Cherry Grove Farm and introduced improved methods and machinery, including the first steam thresher in Rockbridge County; died there, May 7, 1897.
