Hide Profile

Samuel Jordan, who owned land in Buckingham, Halifax, and Albemarle counties, Virginia, served as justice of the peace for Albemarle, 1746-61; captain in 1753; sheriff, 1753-55; presiding justice of the peace and county lieutenant of Buckingham in 1761; burgess from Buckingham, 1761-66, 1767, 1769; colonel of the militia in Buckingham during the revolutionary war. After June 1776 he was state commissioner of the State Foundry for casting cannon in Buckingham.

William Cabell (1730-1798) married Samuel Jordan's daughter, Margaret. Their son William, Jr. (1759-1822) may have been the one involved in this lawsuit.

William Hansford was the bookkeeper for Reveley and Ballendine at their furnace in Buckingham County from 1777 to 1782.

John Reveley (ca. 1740/45-1802) engaged in the foundry business with John Ballendine. He ended up involved in numerous lawsuits beginning in 1784. As the business declined so did his mental health.

John Ballendine operated a packet boat on the upper Potomac for fifteen years before venturing into the iron business on the Occoquan River in Prince William County in 1755. After his partners withdrew, he borrowed heavily but lost the business in 1765. By 1775 he was involved in building a canal on the James River six miles above Richmond. Ballendine then joined with John Reveley in a plan to provide the government with munitions from the Westham Foundry.

John Bernard, a friend of John Reveley, had been security on the building of the dam on Samuel Jordan's property. He lived at Belle Grove in Rappahannock County.

Additional biographical information on Reveley and the legal entanglements pertaining to this suit are located in Sally Reveley Hudgins, The Inhabitants of Woodend (Martin, TN: author, 1981), pp. 64-69, 84-89.
