Leonard, Zenas, 1809-1857
Variant namesBorn in Pennsylvania in 1809, Leonard became a fur trader, a clerk for Captain Benjamin Bonneville, and a member of the Joseph Reddeford Walker expedition to California. In 1836 he established a store near Independence, Missouri, and operated a boat between St. Louis and western Missouri carrying merchandise up-river and furs and other Indian trade products down to St. Louis.
