Newberry Library. General Reading Room Section.

In 1916, with the exception of reading rooms for the Library's endowed collections (Ayer, Wing), the Library's subject-based reading rooms were consolidated into one Main Reading Room (called General Reading Room after 1985).

This reading room was administered by the Public Services Division until 1962 when the division was disbanded. Reading Room personnel then reported to various departments including Reference (1962), Library Operations (1964), Reference (1966), Public Services (1970), and Readers' Services (1975). General Reading Room staff duties have included admissions, paging, some reference inquiries, and interlibrary loan.
