Hughes, Bridget

Hide Profile

Bridget Hughes was the daughter of Daniel and Mary (McConville) Hughes. Both the Hughes and McConvilles were Catholic families living in Creenkill, County Armagh in the north of Ireland. In 1846, Hughes emigrated to the United States with her aunt, Ellen McConville, to escape the Great Famine. They arrived in Boston and settled in Hingham, Massachusetts, where their male relatives joined them between 1848 and 1849. Most of the family moved to the American midwest, seeking farmland. The Hughes settled in Wisconsin, while the McConvilles settled in Illinois.
