Robert Works Fuller, tenth President of Oberlin College, was born in Summit, New Jersey in 1936. After only three years (1952-55) as an undergraduate at Oberlin College, Fuller became a graduate student in physics at Princeton University. He earned the M.A. in physics in 1959 and the Ph. D. in 1961 from Princeton, with terms of study at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris and the University of Chicago. He received the honorary A.B. from Oberlin College in 1971. From 1961 to 1966, he taught physics at Columbia University. He held research fellowships at the Center for Advanced Studies, Wesleyan University (1966- 1967) and at the Battelle Seattle Research Center (1967-1968). From 1968 to 1970, he was Dean of the Faculty at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He served as President of Oberlin College from 1970 until the fall of 1973 when he resigned the office. His tenure at Oberlin College was marked by conflict between the faculty and the President over the question of faculty control of college governance.
