USCGC Eastwind Expedition (active 1966)

The USCGC Eastwind Expedition was an Antarctic exploration made by George E. Watson and J. Phillip Angle during January and February of 1966. Taking place aboard an US Coast Guard icebreaker named the Eastwind, the ship made several deployments in support of science activities for U.S. Navy Operation Deepfreeze, including the one in 1966. Other members of the expedition team included Captain William M. Benkert. Localities visited during the expedition include the South Shetland Islands, Anvers Island, the South Orkney Islands, Gibbs Island, and Elephant Island. A collection of bird specimens was obtained during the trip.
