Hart, Gary K.

Hart was born on August 13, 1943 in San Diego. He earned a master's degree in education from Harvard University, taught first at Santa Barbara High School and later at Laguna Blanca School. Hart was first elected to the California State Assembly in 1974. After his election to the California State Senate in 1982, he served as chair of the State Senate Education Committee for 12 years.

During his time as a legislator, Hart authored landmark legislation that improved and strengthened the educational system, as well as environmental, criminal, and child protection laws. He left public office in 1994.
