Iowa State University. All-University Celebrations Committee.
The All-University Celebration Committee was created in 1998 to coordinate a campus-wide celbration of George Washington Carver, a graduate and an assistant botanist at Iowa State. Events included the dedication of a statue of Carver on campus, a faculty exchange with Tuskegee University, and a photograph exhibit at the Brunnier Museum. After the year-long celebration, the decision was made to continue with annual, themed celebrations for the University.
"Advancing Technology to Become the Best" was the theme used for the following year (1999-2000_. The theme was chosen to celebrate the many technological advances created by Iowa State researchers and alumni and was highlighted by the dedication of Howe Hall and continued publicity of the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) replica. The original machine, crated and built by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry from 1939 to 1942, is considered to be the first electronic digital computer.
The theme chosen for the following academic year (2000-2001) was "Strengthening Families to Become the Best." This celebration highlighted the many contributions Iowa State, particularly the College of Family and Consumer Sciences (now part of the College of Human Sciences) and University Extension, has made to the state. Highlights for this year included the dedication of the Palmer Building and the creation of the world's largest Rice Krispies Treat at Iowa State's annal VEISHEA celebration.
The final University-wide celebration planned by the committee was "Challenging Students to Become Their Best" (2001-2002). Highlights of this year included the dedication of the Thielen Student Health Center and the Jischke Honors Building and other activities and events. The year-long celebrations were discontinued the following year.
