State Defense Council of North Dakota

The State Defense Council of North Dakota was established by proclamation by Governor John Moses on June 3, 1941. The Council's purpose was to serve as coordinator and means of communication between the Federal Defense Agencies and the State and Local Defense Councils. Council members were unpaid appointees. By the United States' entry into WWII in Dec. 1941, local Councils of Defense had been organized in all ND counties. The Women's Service of the State Defense Council of North Dakota, renamed the Women's Division by Jan. 1943, coordinated women's civilian activities, including: salvage, consumer service, conservation, war bond and stamp sales, recreation, education, public health, transportation, housing of war industries workers, victory gardens, Red Cross Training Schools, Extension Service of the ND Agricultural College.
