The Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden was founded in 1933 as a federation of Jewish organizations and regional and local Jewish communities to represent German Jewry in dealing with the Nazi authorities. In 1934, the Nazi government renamed it the Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland. It was dissolved in 1938 and was replaced in 1939 by the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland, a compulsory organization of all Jews living in Nazi Germany, as defined by the Nuremberg laws.

The lawyer Alfred Hirschberg (born in Gnesen, now Gniezno, Poland in 1901) was director of the Berlin branch of Centralverein deutscher Staatsbuerger juedischen Glaubens, the roof organization for German Jewry before 1934. He remained active in the leadership of its successor organization, Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden, before emigrating to Brazil in 1940, where he died in 1971.
