Located on Peaks Island, part of Portland, Me. Formed in 1872, Civil War veterans of 8th Maine Volunteers formed a veterans' association and began hosting reunions around the state. In 1891 Col. William McArthur, donated land and the memorial on Peaks Island and memorial to the group. Once open only to lineal descendants and guests, the association now operates as a non-profit museum while providing a living history experience with guest accomodations in the building. Has operated continuously since the days of the original veterans and the spirit of the men of the 8th Maine Regiment has been passed down from one generation of descendents to the next for over 130 years.
