Jim Edgar was born in Vinita, Oklahoma, on July 22, 1946. He was educated in Charleston (Ill.) public schools and at Eastern Illinois University (BS, 1968), and did postgraduate work at the University of Illinois (1969-1970) and Sangamon State University (1971-1974). A Republican, Edgar worked for various office holders as an aide and adviser before being elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1976 and 1978. He was appointed Secretary of State in January 1981, and elected to that office in 1982 and 1986. After two terms as governor, Edgar left office and joined the faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
