Kuno Meyer (1858-1919), scholar of Celtic languages and literature was born in Hamburg, Germany, educated at the University of Leipzig and achieved his doctorate in 1883. He specialised in the study of the Irish language and literature in particular, declaring it the principal object of his life. He also had a keen interest in the music, poetry and language of Wales and was a fluent Welsh speaker. He was appointed Lecturer in Teutonic Languages at the University of Liverpool in 1884 and later became Professor of Celtic Studies there. He died in Leipzig in 1919.
