The board was created as the Board of Examkiners of Practical Nurses by the legislature in 1953. In 1977 the name was changed to its present title.

The board enacts rules and regulations regarding the training of licensed practical nurses (LPNs), the issuances of temporary licenses, and the protection of the public from practical nursing by legally unqualified persons. The board approves the written examinations for applicants as well as sets intitial license and renewal fees. It also approves school and hospital training programs for LPNs in Georgia. For good cause, and after notice and hearing, the board may revoke the license of any LPN in the state.
