The Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, Smith College Chapter was granted its charter on December 28, 1934, the first charter ever granted to a women's institution. Throughout its history the chapter has undertaken many programs designed to encourage and support scientific research at Smith, both amongst its undergraduate students and its faculty. These programs include: a house academic competition, lecture series, participation in national meetings, and research and conference support. The chapter also nominates and elects new members each spring.
