Wurts, Samuel Grandin, 1775-1834
Variant namesSamuel G. Wurts was the eldest brother of Maurice, William and John Wurts, founders of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company. Samuel was born in northwestern New Jersey at the site of his father's iron foundry and was apparently trained in that work. During 1800-1803 he signed on the U.S. Frigate CONSTELLATION, after which he travelled to central Pennsylvania to take a position as clerk at Bedford Furnace.
