Born June 17, 1923 on her parents' farm in Herrick, Illinois. Just out of high school, Ruth decided to move to Chicago to live with her sister, enrolling in the American Aircraft Institute, where she learned a variety of manufacturing skills. She lived with several other girls at the Eleanor Club for Girls in Chicago. Following her graduation, she found work with the Howard Aircraft Corporation, where she worked as a riveter on the G3-H Nightingale, a U.S. Navy trainer. Following this, Ruth worked at the Signal Depot. After the war, she returned to Herrick, and eventually found work as a beautician.
