Carl B. Montgomery was born 23 January 1921 in Washington, Pennsylvania. He entered the Army in 1940; served in Company H; and later, was in Service Company, 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division as photographer, editor of the regimental paper, and chaplain's assistant. Montgomery was captured at the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and was held as a prisoner of war (POW) until April 1945 when he was released to a hospital in England. In October 1945, Montgomery was discharged from the Army as a technical sergeant fifth grade. Following the war, Montgomery attended college, married, and worked in the hotel business and as a personnel manager for a theatre sign company in New York.
