Maria Brooks writes, directs, and produces historical documentaries for Waterfront Soundings Productions in Oakland, California. She has also been active in producing oral history projects. In 1983, Brooks compiled the Alaska Women's Oral History Collection, which includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews. In 1999, she produced, wrote, and directed the documentary, "The Odyssey of Captain Healy," about Captain Michael Healy, who commanded the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bear in Alaskan coastal waters from 1886-1895.
