The Earls of Clare held estates in Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire and Middlesex. These descended to the Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne through John Holles, 3rd Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne and 4th Earl of Clare (1662-1711). Henry Walter of Haughton, Nottinghamshire, was the collector and receiver-general of the estates of the Earls of Clare in Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire. The Nottinghamshire properties for which he was responsible included Bevercotes, Bothamsall, Drayton, Elkesley and Markham.
