Henry Hammond was born in Croydon in 1914 . He studied at the Croydon School of Art from 1929-1934 and then after being awarded a Royal Exhibition Scholarship at the Royal College of Art, London from 1934-1938 . At the RCA he was taught design and mural painting by Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden, going on to join the pottery classes taught by William Staite Murray.

In 1946, after two weeks at the Leach Pottery, St Ives he took up the post at Farnham eventually becoming Head of the Ceramics department. During 1946-1951 he worked in slipware only. He set up his studio at Runwick House, Hampshire in 1947, later moving to Bentley, Hampshire in 1948, at the pottery known as the Oast Pottery, where he was joined in the workshop by Paul Barron in 1954 . Hammond attended the International Conference of Craftsmen at Dartington Hall in 1952 with Paul Barron. He had a two-man show with David Leach at the Casson Gallery, London in 1977 . Hammond retired in 1980 and was awarded the MBE. He died in France in 1989 . Hammond was one of the founder Trustees of the Crafts Study Centre which has many examples of work relating to his life in their collection and archive including pots, drawings, letters and other documents. A retrospective exhibition of his work A Fine Line was organised by the Craft Study Centre in 1992 .
