Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Office of the Director.
Harald Ulrik Sverdrup was appointed Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography by University of California President Robert Gordon Sproul on April 11, 1936. He arrived in La Jolla, California from Bergen, Norway, on August 23, 1936 and assumed the directorship on September 1, 1936 for a period of three years. His appointment was extended on April 9, 1940, when the invasion of Norway made it impossible for him to return to his native country. Sverdrup announced his plan to resign as director on January 30, 1947 and left the directorship on February 28, 1948.
