Mary Catherine Cox was born in Maryland and was educated in Pittsburgh and at the York County Academy in York, Pa. In 1864 she became the first woman telegrapher employed by the Northern Central Railway Company, and later head of the telegraph office in York, where she trained other women telegraphers. In 1869 she resigned in order to marry William F. Busser; they had four sons.
