Subsidiary of Northern Pacific Railroad; operations begun in Roslyn, W.T., in 1886 to mine large deposits of bituminous coal held by the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. on its grant lands. In 1899 Northern Pacific Coal Company was purchased by Northwestern Improvement Company, another subsidiary of Northern Pacific Railway Company.
