Established May 30, 1831, the Society's membership included students and faculty of the Harvard Divinity School. The Society met to discuss theology and any "benevolent projects of the day ... particulaly with respect to the spread of Christian principles...." While the volume title gives the name "Philanthropic Society in the Theological School of Harvard University," the constitution written within that volume indicates the group's name is "The Philanthropic Society in the Divinity School of Harvard University." Theological School and Divinity School seem to be used interchangably in these records.
