A graduate of Indiana University (B.A., 1957) and the University of North Carolina (Ph.D., 1963), Dr. Brown wrote biographies, Daniel Webster (1969) and Edward Stanly (1974), before turning to Texas political history. He has published Hood, Bonnet, and Little Brown Jug: Texas Politics, 1921-1928 (1984). In the field of Civil War history, he has edited One of Cleburne’s Command (1908) and Journey to Pleasant Hill (1982). Brown held the Barbara White Stuart Centennial Professor in Texas History Chair at the University of Texas at Austin, teaching courses in American history with a focus on Texas and the South.
