Variant namesRichard Burns, a graduate of Hamilton College, began work as a volunteer news reporter and office manager in 1977 at the Gay Community News of Boston, Mass. He became managing editor in 1978, and in 1980 President of its Board of Directors. He co-founded Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, Inc. of Boston in 1978, and served as president of its Board of Directors from its inception to 1986. He graduated from Northeastern University Law School in 1983, and was admitted to he bar.
Burns was a member of the Board of Directors of Lambda Defense and Education Fund from 1980 to 1983, and of the National Education Foundation for Individual Rights, Inc., from 1981 to 1983. Mr. Burns co-founded the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association in 1983 and served as its co-chair through 1986. He was editor of the National Lesbian and Gay Attorney's Referral Directory and Co-editor of Gay Jubilee. He became Executive Director of the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center (New York, N.Y.) in 1986.
