William J. Hilmert was born in the Netherlands in 1903. He graduated from Hope College in 1925 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1934. Before joining the faculty of Hope College in 1952 as a professor of religion and dean of men, Hilmert served as pastor of both the Garfield Park Church, Grand Rapids (1934-1940) and Second Church, Zeeland (1940-1948), and as director of the Kentucky Mission (1948-1952). He retired from Hope College in 1968.
