Lawyer, judge, and state legislator; born in Lodi, Bergen County, New Jersey, March 2, 1814; graduated from Rutgers College, 1833; studied law in New Jersey at Somerville (under Governor Peter D. Vroom) and at Paterson (under Elias B.D. Ogden); admitted to the bar as an attorney in 1836 and as a counselor in 1840; practiced in Paterson, at first in partnership with Ogden, later with son Robert I.; held various Paterson and Passaic County legal offices; served as a trustee of Rutgers College, 1851-1897; served in the New Jersey Senate, 1868-1871 and 1874-1877, as judge of the District Court of Paterson, 1877-1887, and as a Passaic County judge, 1887-1897; died October 20, 1897.
