Hide Profile

Stanley Garfinkel (1930-1997) was an oral historian, documentarian, and history professor at Kent State University. After college, Garfinkel worked in his family's seven-store chain Garfinkel Shoes. He was appointed office manager of the company in the early 1960s, but was encouraged by his father to pursue his dream of teaching. He obtained a position at Kent State University in 1963 and taught there until his retirement in 1996. Garfinkel had a special interest in oral history. One of Garfinkel's oral history projects was on the garment industry in Cleveland, Ohio. He interviewed several people who worked in or helped shape the garment industry. He then used those interviews to produce a slide show entitled "Rags: 100 Years of the Apparel Industry in Northeast Ohio," and a television documentary entitled "Rags."
