The Ladou family (alternatively spelled Ladow, La Dow, Ladu, Ladue, Le Dieux, and Le Doux) traces its roots to Pierre Ladou (1662-1713), a French Huguenot who emigrated to New York in the 1690s. Ladou settled in New Rochelle, a city which had been founded by other Huguenot refugees a decade earlier. While some branches of the Ladou family established themselves in Canada, many remained in New York State and Connecticut, becoming active supporters of the American Revolution: Brinkerhoff's Regiment of the New York State Militia was comprised largely of members of the Ladue (Ladou) family. Other notable members of the family include Jesse La Dow, an early settler of Mansfield, Ohio.
