Lady Augusta Stanley (nee Bruce) was born in 1822, fifth daughter of Thomas Bruce, the seventh earl of Elgin. She became an attendant to Queen Victoria, and in December 1863, married Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (1815-1881), professor of ecclesiastical history and canon of Christ Church, Oxford, who was the son of Reverend Edward Stanley (1779-1849). In January 1864, her husband became dean of Westminster Abbey, a post he held until his death in 1881. She died on 1 March 1876.
