Hubert Howe Bancroft was a historian, bibliophile, book dealer, and entrepreneur, born in 1832 in Granville, Ohio.

Opened a bookstore in San Francisco in 1856, which became extremely important in the trade of Western history materials. Bancroft's library later formed the nucleus of the Bancroft Library at the Univ. of California, Berkeley. Most materials in this collection were written by Bancroft's first wife Emily Ketchum or their daughter Kate.
