William Sydney Wicks was born in Trenton, New York (Oneida County) on July 27, 1854. After completing his education studying architecture at Cornell University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wicks worked briefly in the Boston office of Peabody and Sterns. He entered into a partnership with Edward Brodhead Green in 1881, and in 1884, the Green & Wicks architectural firm moved from Auburn, NY to Buffalo, NY. In 1889, Wicks wrote the best-selling manual "Log cabins and cottages: How to build and furnish them," which promoted his belief in site integration, or designing a building to compliment and harmonize with the favorable attributes of the site on which it is to be built. Wicks served as Buffalo parks commissioner from 1897 until 1900. He was a life member of the Buffalo Historical Society and the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, as well as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Wicks retired from the Green & Wicks architectural firm in 1917 and died on May 30, 1919.
