Crisp, D. H. (Downing H.)
Englishman and officer in the navy of the Republic of Texas.
Son of an English naval commander, Downing H. Crisp served on the Brutus during 1837, was a second lieutenant on the Austin during the naval cruise of 1840-1841, charted the Tobasco River aboard the San Bernard from May to Oct., 1841, and was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the San Bernard in 1842. When the navy was disbanded in 1843, Crisp was intending to return to Europe, but either decided not to leave or contracted cholera and died in Galveston before he could.
