Maurice Jefferson Matteson (1893-1964) was a musician, teacher, and folklorist of Columbia, S.C.; Matteson began his career in Chicago, Ill., as a music teacher and baritone soloist with the Cinncinnati, Minnesota, and Russian symphony orchestras; in 1922, began teaching music at University of South Carolina, where he served as professor of music for 15 years, and served as director of the Glee Club and the Carolina Folk Singers; served as first president of the Southeastern Folklore Society; husband of Augusta Lofton Matteson.
