Thomas M. Brewer (1814-1880) was an American ornithologist and oölogist. Maximilian, Prince of Wied, travelled extensively in the United States, describing the indigenous peoples, as well as the flora and fauna of the area.

Prince Maximilian of Wied spent two years on a natural science expedition to the American West in 1832-1834 along with Swiss artist Karl Bodmer. In 1839 Maximilian published his account in German titled Reise in das innere Nord-America in den Jahren 1832 bis 1834. Eighty-one aquatints engraved from Bodmer's original art work were issued separately between 1839-1841.

Prince Maximilian of Wied spent two years, along with two other German scientists, exploring the coastal forests of Brazil between 1815 and 1817. He made detailed notes and sketches on the aborigines and their customs and later published in 1820-1821 his Reise nach Brasilien in den jahren 1815 bis 1817. This work established Maximilian's reputation as an explorer, naturalist, and ethnologist.
