Confederate Officer; enlisted 1861 at the age of 23, into the 44th Virginia Volunteers, Company E as first lieutenant; promoted to captain in May 1862; he also served in the 19th Virginia Battalion Heavy Artillery, Company E, serving in both cases in Gen. Stonewall Jackson's brigade.
