The North Carolina Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa honorary society was established at the University of North Carolina in 1905. From 1920 to 1948, Francis F. Bradshaw and Ernest L. Mackie, as Dean of Men or Dean of Students, administered the chapter. From 1948 to 1966, Dean Mackie continued his activity in local chapter, district, and national affairs while he was a full-time member of the University's Dept. of Mathematics.
