Born in 1886, Frank Cather and his twin brother Oscar grew up in Webster County, Nebraska. Willa Cather and Frank were first cousins. Frank's brother, G.P. Cather, who died in World War I, served as the prototype for the main character, Claude Wheeler, in Willa Cather's novel One of Ours . Frank Cather taught school at Campbell, Nebraska, from 1904 to 1906. In 1906, he moved to Boston, where he studied piano at the Boston Conservatory of Music. At the end of the summer of 1907, he left Boston to spend several weeks with family members in Clearbrook, Virginia. Cather eventually returned to Nebraska and filed a homestead claim in McPherson County where he lived until he returned to Webster County in 1915.
