Hide Profile

Educational institution for African-Americans, later known as Harbison Institute and Harbison Junior College; founded as Ferguson Academy, in Abbeville, S.C., and supported by the Presbyterian Church, the school originally served as a coeducational institution; in 1911, the school moved to Irmo, S.C., and was renamed in honor of Samuel P. Harbison who donated twenty acres of land; on its new campus, the school limited admissions to male students only, and added agricultural instruction to its main curriculum. Many students paid for their tuition and board by working on the college's farm. The institution also maintained a coed parochial school for local children. The school closed in 1958.
