Jesse Sumner Battle (1829-1864) was born in Greene County, Georgia. He was educated at Mercer University and married Nancy Elizabeth Thomas Culbreath in 1850. In 1862, he joined the Confederate States Army. He served first with Captain Lane's Company, Pendleton's Reserve Corps of Artillery, then transferred to Company C of the 11th Georgia Artillery Battalion (Sumter Artillery). He was killed in a mine explosion near Petersburg, Pennsylvania, on July 3, 1864. He was survived by his wife and three children: Pulaski Erstus Battle, Mattie Elizabeth Battle, and John Armistead Battle. James Norman Adams (1844-1862) was the son of Zelotus and Anne O. Chivers Adams. He enlisted in 1861 at Decatur, Georgia. He served first with Company C, Cobbs Legion, Georgia Volunteers, then in Captain Glenn's Company (Stephen's Rifles), Georgia Legion. He was not reported killed in action, but in 1863 his father submitted an affidavit proving his death on September 14, 1862 at the battle of Crampton Gap, Maryland. Norman Adams' sister, Ellen Tree Adams, married Pulaski Erastus Battle, the son of Jesse Battle.
