Author, AIDS activist, and social worker, Stan Henry (1951-2003) was involved in the formation of several AIDS advocacy groups in Seattle, Washington, including the Seattle AIDS Support Group, Seattle Gay Clinic, Northwest AIDS Foundation, and Chicken Soup Brigade. He also was active in the gay comics scene; his writing appeared in collaboration with San Francisco comic book artist, Carl Vaughn Frick, as "Watch Out! Comix." As a writer, Henry used many pseudonyms, but published most frequently under "Staszek." His work appeared in "Seattle Gay News," "Paper Radio," "Sacred City," "Puck," and "OUT/LOOK," among other periodicals. An anthology of short stories, "Three-Hand Jax and Other Spells" (1995), was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award. He also published "Wind of Knives" (1998) through Okama Press, his own small publishing company. Additionally, Stan Henry created works for the theater. He wrote two short plays, "Make Me" (1986) and "Somebody ... Please" (1990), which were produced in Seattle. He also co-wrote a musical (as "Rebecca Stone"), "Hibiscus," with Michael Harris (the brother of Hibiscus, a member of the Cockettes), which was staged at the Pilgrim Center for the Arts in Seattle in 1990. Stan Henry was deeply involved in the response to the AIDS crisis in Seattle early on. In 1983, he co-founded the Seattle AIDS Support Group (SASG) with Josh Joshua and Ann McCaffray. He remained active in SASG for many years. In the arena of social work, he worked at the Virginia Mason Medical Center, the Pike Market Medical Clinic, the Department of Social Work at the University of Washington, and as a patient advocate in the Social Work Group at Harborview Medical Center. In the mid-1990s, Henry shifted careers, becoming a freelance technical writer and later working for Adobe Systems.
