Robert Augustine Thornton (ca. 1843-1915) was born in Virginia. After serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War he attended law school in Cincinnati, Ohio. He practiced law in Lexington, Kentucky in partnership at various times with John C. Breckinridge, J.B. Beck, and Charles Kerr. He married Caroline H. Preston, the daughter of General William Preston, in 1870 and had three children: William Preston Thornton, Margaret Howard Thornton who married George Radford Hunt, and Caroline Preston Thornton who married Dr. John W. Scott.
